The maker of Soldier Bending a Bow is something of a mystery. The sculpture is thought to be a nineteenth century copy of a work by the eighteenth century French sculptor Jacques Bousseau. However, the Harlow cast is signed ‘P.Puget’, possibly Pierre Puget, French painter and sculptor in the Baroque style who died in 1694. The subject matter is inspired by ancient Greek mythology, and the sculpture depicts Odysseus with the bow of Herakles: a weapon that would be indispensable in his war against the Trojans.
