Sir Frederick Gibberd was born in Coventry in 1908. One of the most influential architects of the Modern Movement in Britain, notable buildings include Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and the Regent’s Park Mosque. He was appointed Master Planner for the development of Harlow New Town in 1947, with a remit to accommodate 60,000 inhabitants – many of them moving from bombed out or uninhabitable accommodation in London. Himself a lifelong collector of art, he founded Harlow Art Trust in 1953. Unusually for a Master Planner, he took up residence in Harlow and remained until his death in 1984.
