Not in Anger takes the clenched fist, associated with the symbol of Republican solidarity with those suffering in the Spanish Civil War, as its subject. Underwood had also dreamed of a giant anti-war memorial standing on the cliff-top above Dover, with the fist closed in a gesture of peace, the thumb enclosed by the fingers.

Leon Underwood (1890-1975) was a noted sculptor, painter, scholar, philosopher and stained-glass and furniture craftsman (among other pursuits). He established the Brook Green School in Hammersmith, London in 1919 and his students included Moore, Hepworth and the surrealist Eileen Agar.
