Sheep Shearer

Ralph Brown was born in Leeds in 1928 and is the younger contemporary of the eminent group of Yorkshire sculptors that include Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Kenneth Armitage. Sheep Shearer was purchased by Harlow Art Trust in 1955 while Brown was studying at the Royal College of Art. The rural subject matter of this piece was thought to complement its setting on the edge of a New Town, encapsulating the ‘country’ as assuredly as his later Meat Porters in Market Square does the city. Sheep Shearer was listed Grade-II by English Heritage in 2011.
